US Soccer Star Aly Wagner Urges Solidarity With Iranian Women During Live World Cup Broadcast by Ben Cohen

Retired US women’s soccer star Aly Wagner on Friday issued a heartfelt plea for the rights of Iranian women, as she commented during a live broadcast of Iran’s opening clash with Morocco in Group B of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Criticizing the Tehran regime’s ban on women attending soccer matches — a policy imposed in the wake of the 1979 Islamic Revolution — US national women’s team veteran Wagner remarked that “there has to be more movement in that country in support of the women, and equal rights.”
“Perhaps we could pipe this broadcast into the [Iranian] president’s office,” the Olympic Gold Medal winner and two-time women’s World Cup finalist added.

Wagner’s fellow match commentator, Derek Rae, opined that there was a “certain irony” in the ban.
“I say that because Iran has a great women’s futsal team,” Rae pointed out, referring to the country’s recent successes in the popular indoor variant of soccer.
Rae also noted that Iran’s captain, Masoud Shojaei, had become the first Iranian professional soccer player to openly call for an end to the ban on women’s attendance.
“They should set a course that women are also allowed to come to stadiums in the future,” Shojaei told Iranian news outlet Varsesh3.com this week.
The jubilant Iranians in Saint Petersburg who watched their team grab a 1-0 victory against Morocco in the dying moments of Friday’s match included plenty of female fans.
But in Tehran, Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei avoided the subject of soccer entirely during a meeting with ambassadors from Islamic countries just before Friday’s contest.
Issuing another prediction of the imminent demise of the State of Israel instead, the 78-year-old Khamenei told his audience that the “Zionist regime is not going to last long.”
“There is no doubt that this regime, which is based on a false foundation, is going to be destroyed by efforts of Islamic countries,” Khamenei continued, in remarks that were carried by his regime’s official media outlets. “The people of Palestine — real Palestinians…should decide on the fate of the others who entered that country.”

The annual carnival in Aalst, Belgium, is expected to take place on Sunday with even more antisemitic elements than in previous years.
Aalst’s organizers have sold hundreds of “rabbi kits” for revelers to dress as hassidic Jews in the carnival’s parade. The kit includes oversized noses, sidelocks (peyot) and black hats. The organizers plan to bring back floats similar to the one displayed in 2019 featuring oversized dolls of Jews, with rats on their shoulders, holding banknotes.

Pope Francis on Sunday warned against “inequitable solutions” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying they would only be a prelude to new crises, in an apparent reference to US President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace proposal.
Francis made his comments in the southern Italian port city of Bari, where he traveled to conclude a meeting of bishops from all countries in the Mediterranean basin.
Israel, Palestinian Authority Agree to End Trade Dispute: Officials

Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) have reached an agreement to end a five-month long trade dispute, officials said on Thursday.
The dispute, which opened a new front in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, began in September when the PA announced a boycott of Israel calves. The PA exercises limited self-rule in the West Bank under interim peace deals.

Disturbing images emerged on Sunday of the annual carnival at Aalst, Belgium, showing an astounding number of antisemitic themes, costumes, displays and statements.
Israeli journalist Raphael Ahren documented people dressed as caricatures of Orthodox Jews, a fake “wailing wall” attacking critics of the parade, blatantly antisemitic characters and puppets wearing traditional Jewish clothes and sporting huge noses.

The stench of anti-Semitism always hovers over Switzerland’s Lake Geneva when the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is meeting there. The foul emanations reached a new nadir last week with UNHRC’s publication of a “database” of companies doing business in the disputed territories in Israel.
Following the publication of the list, Bruno Stagno Ugarte, deputy director for advocacy of NGO Human Rights Watch, stated, “The long-awaited release of the U.N. settlement business database should put all companies on notice: To do business with illegal settlements [sic] is to aid in the commission of war crimes.”
